AT J. H. CUTLER WE PROVIDE A BESPOKE SHIRT MAKING SERVICE IN ADDITION TO BESPOKE TAILORING AND I AM OFTEN ASKED FOR ADVICE FROM MY CLIENTS AS TO HOW THEY SHOULD BEST CARE FOR THEIR CUSTOM MADE SHIRTS.I ASSUME THAT THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE LOOKING FOR SIMILAR ADVICE.
Here are 10 key points that should go a long way to helping to ensure that you get the maximum amount of wear from your shirts:
1) Remember to remove collar stiffeners and cuff links before washing.
2) Shirts should be washed by hand, or machine, in water no hotter than 40 degrees centigrade.
3) When machine washing use the gentlest cycle and ideally place your shirts in a lingerie bag to prevent collars and cuffs chafing during the spin cycle.
4) Wash dark colours separately.
5) Do not tumble dry your shirts, but allow them to drip dry on a coat hanger.
6) Shirts should be ironed when slightly damp, or with the aid of a water spray. Special care should be taken to iron the collar away from the points.
7) With dark shirts iron on the inside of the collar to avoid fading.
8) Hang your shirt on a suitable hanger after ironing.
9) The restore colour and brightness, shirts can be soaked in Napisan every four or five wears.
10) Resew shirt buttons when loose to avoid losing them.
I hope you find the above to be useful. If you would like to know more about the bespoke shirt making service that we offer at J. H. Born in 1949 and christened John Handel Lawson Cutler, I am the fourth generation of my family to take up the tailor's shears. I joined the family business straight from school at 16 years of age. Even before then I had always shown a very keen interest in bespoke tailoring and shirt making.
