I AM ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED THAT DAVID DOWSEY, THE AUSTRALIAN AUTHOR AND JOURNALIST, HAS DECIDED TO WRITE A BOOK ABOUT THE 128 YEAR HISTORY OF MY FAMILY’S BUSINESS, THE SYDNEY- BASED BESPOKE TAILOR AND SHIRT MAKER J. H. CUTLER. I HAVE KNOWN DAVID FOR MANY YEARS AND AM SURE HE WILL DO AN ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT JOB.
David is currently researching the book and as part of this exercise is trying to locate the oldest surviving J. H. Cutler garment or artefact. Maybe you, or someone you know can help? The company was founded in Sydney in 1884 and I would like to think that there are items hidden away in a wardrobe or attic somewhere in Australia or overseas. But not so well hidden that no one is aware of their existence!
The most notable items, including the absolute oldest are guaranteed inclusion in the finished book. As are their owners if they so desire.
I will be sure to
keep you informed of progress on this project in the months ahead.
Born in 1949 and christened John Handel Lawson Cutler, I am the fourth generation of my family to take up the tailor's shears. I joined the family business straight from school at 16 years of age. Even before then I had always shown a very keen interest in bespoke tailoring and shirt making.
