From a time gone by

I TAKE PARTICULAR DELIGHT IN DESIGNING AND MAKING CLOTHES THAT ALLOW ME TO GIVE FULL REIN TO MY CREATIVE BENT.

I was therefore very happy when a dear client of mine recently asked me to produce an ensemble that he could wear at a 1940’s themed party he had been invited to attend, which was to be held at a castle in the United Kingdom.

Based on this wonderful brief I designed and made a 1940’s style white silk jacket, a double-breasted Marcella cotton dress waistcoat with pearl buttons and a shirt featuring a separate stiff collar. An ultra wide striped necktie and one of my pearl tiepins complemented these.

My client’s host, a Lord of the Realm who was celebrating his 50th birthday in some style, was apparently most impressed, as were a number of my client’s fellow guests who also commented most favourably on his attire.

I think this very enjoyable exercise is a prefect example of my long held belief that when it comes to bespoke clothing truly the only limit is one’s imagination.

scabal-salvador-daliAT J. H. CUTLER I HAVE RECENTLY INTRODUCED A NEW RANGE OF SUITING FABRICS FROM THE LEADING INTERNATIONAL FABRIC HOUSE SCABAL CALLED “DALI’S COLLECTION”.

This introduction coincides with the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne showing of the Salvador Dali Liquid Desire Exhibition that runs through until the 4th October.

The collection consists of 24 classic light to medium weight fabrics (320g), featuring irregular stripes and daring colour accents in Super 120’s wool with cashmere. Scabal’s designers set out to faithfully reproduce the innovative and ground breaking character of Dali’s style in the collection, and drew inspiration from 12 paintings that Scabal had commissioned more than 30 years ago from the Spanish artist on his view of clothes of the then futuristic 3rd millennium.

I would be delighted to show you samples of the fabrics at my private rooms on Level 6, 12 O’ Connell Street in Sydney’s CBD. Call me on 02 9232 7122 to arrange an appointment.

Who is John Cutler?

Born in 1949 and christened John Handel Lawson Cutler, I am the fourth generation of my family to take up the tailor's shears. I joined the family business straight from school at 16 years of age. Even before then I had always shown a very keen interest in bespoke tailoring and shirt making.
